2009 Upper Deck Rivals

March 18, 2009

I am on a bit of a streak with 2009 Upper Deck.  Well, if two posts can be considered a streak, I am.  And its going to end tomorrow also.  So, its not really a streak at all.  Maybe a mini-jag.

Today’s card is a 2009 Upper Deck Rivals insert featuring Josh Hamilton and Roy Oswalt.  I suppose they are rivals based solely on geography, but really rivalries should build out of the game.  According to the back of the card, Hamilton has all of 9 ABs against Oswalt (he’s 2-9), and most of those probably came before he even joined the Rangers.  If I had my druthers, I would have put Hamilton on this card with Morneau, and mention their duel in the HR Derby.  As is so often the case, however – no one asked me.

This card was added to my collection courtesy of Sooz over at A Cardboard Problem.  This was a surprise package that knocked off several cards that I hadn’t even had a chance to add to my wantlist yet.

2009 Upper Deck Inkredible

March 17, 2009

Today’s pickup demonstrates the importance of casting a wide net when you are looking for cards.  I have a lot of venues for cards.  I find it makes it easier to make pickups.  Plus, it keeps me from getting obsessive.  It might sound like it makes it easier to get obsessive, but in reality – more sites are harder to keep track of, and I forget a few here and there for a week or so.  It keeps me realistic.  I can’t have everything.  But I can look at a bunch of stuff.  Who doesn’t like window shopping?

I picked up my copy of the 2009 Upper Deck Inkredible (I like that name, lame though it may be) on SportLots.  With eBay’s fee increases and policy changes, I have noticed more and more ‘mid end’ singles popping up on the site.  It used to be a destination for base cards and low end inserts, but now there is a decent mix of low end jerseys, the odd autograph and even a printing plate.

The only weird thing about this card is that Hamilton is wearing an armband with #9 on it, rather than his jersey number of 32.  Does anyone have any insight?  Or know who on the Rangers wears #9, and might be missing an armband?

Stretching & Sliding with the Dominican Republic

March 15, 2009

I don’t have a ton to say about the Dominican Republic team on the field, but they have provided some awesome photographs from the early part of the tournament.

Pitcher Pedro Martinez.  How is a man this flexible currently unemployed?

Nelson Cruz in a much more conventional baseball pose.

Air Miggy!

OK, he’s cheating a little bit by steadying himself with his hand.  The rest of the photo makes up for it.  One of the goals of the Goose Joak set was great photography, and I think this certainly qualifies.

2009 Topps Heritage New Age Performers

March 14, 2009

I got off relatively lightly as far as Hamilton goes in Heritage.  In the hobby version he was a short print, but those aren’t incredibly tough to track down and also an insert.  He also has one of those awesome looking Mayo inserts that seem to be in retail versions.  I don’t have the SP, nor the Mayo insert, but a friend who breaks cases of most products hooked me up with a copy of the New Age Performers inserts.  One funny thing about Heritage, the singles all make it look like everyone has a crappy scanner.  Its kind of endearing.

Everybody Weng Chao Tonight!

March 13, 2009

In honour of China’s WBC team of course!  A few more WBC Goose Joak’s this time, this time from the Far East.  Team China didn’t make it out of the first round in this tournament, but they made it to cyber-cardboard….

Hou Fenglian sliding in to home.

Zhang Zhenwang and his magical floating bat.

And the aforementioned Weng Chao, swinging for the fences.

Pictures of Hamilton McFarlane

March 12, 2009

A little while ago, I had a quick story about Josh Hamilton being included in McFarlane’s upcoming MLB 2009 Wave 2.  Now, I can update that with pictures.  If you are so inclined (I am going to wait for it to hit stores), you can preorder a figure for your collection here.  Its a Rangers figure, but I am still holding out for a Home Run Derby variant.

Here’s the picture.  Looks like he is waiting his turn in the on deck circle.

A bit further on A&G thanks to some help from….

March 12, 2009

Saints of the Cheap Seats. A little while ago, I got an email from Dan at Saints of the Cheap Seats – he had a list of A&G minis that I needed for my set.  Some base minis (I am getting close on this one), and one of those elusive black borders as well (not so close on that one).   I am working on getting a package of stuff ready for Dan to repay the kindness.

Obamicon Me = New Gravatar!

March 11, 2009

I was surfing the interwebs, and came across a bunch of custom ‘Hope’ pictures of Barack Obama.  Naturally, I was intrigued.  I found the website – Obamicon.me, and tried out a few things.  My first few attempts were terrible.  It really pays to take their advice and use a picture with either a transparent or plain white background.  Otherwise, everything looks kind of deformed, and I didn’t want that.

Here’s my Josh Hamilton Obamicon….

The top portion of this picture will be my new Gravatar, and should appear when I comment on most sites.  Definitely on WordPress sites, I am not sure if I have to go in and manually change my Blogger profile to use this picture.  Tests will be forthcoming.

Josh Hamilton has this kind of dedication…

March 11, 2009

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Josh Hamilton chipped a tooth while signing autographs.  You know, how whenever an athlete ends up with a weird injury, there is always the list of other athletes with weird injuries?  If Hamilton was going to miss any significan time with this, it’d be right up there on the list.  Apparently, he was holding his drink in his mouth while inking some items for fans.  I can hear my mother now “Don’t put that in your mouth!”

Personally, it would take about a week for them to drag me to the dentist.  I hate dentists.
